A new program for schools this fall

Nutrition for Learning is excited to be back in schools with our Student Nutrition Programs this September. Kicking off the week of September 14th deliveries to all 149 programs will begin! As you would expect our Student Nutrition Programs will be very different this year. In order to comply with all the guidelines directed by the Government of Ontario, Nutrition for Learning has worked closely with the WRDSB, WCDSB as well as the Department of Public Health to ensure we have a plan and procedures that are safe, appropriate, and universally accessible to all students returning to the classrooms this fall.

Volunteers Needed

Since volunteers will not be allowed in the schools this school year Nutrition for Learning will be prepackaging bags of appropriate food items for students to grab and go.   The volunteermenu will be limited at first, but we will adjust to expand food items over the first few months as necessary and appropriate to accommodate the needs of our various school communities.

Volunteers will not be allowed in the schools this fall; HOWEVER  Nutrition for Learning is in desperate need for as many volunteers to assist with pre-packaging our nutrition bags for school deliveries starting the week of September 8th to prepare the upwards of 60,000 bags required for the first weeks of school.  If you or anyone is interested in volunteering for a morning or afternoon shift or have a small group that would like to pack please contact Tania Moser at tmoser@nutritionforlearning.ca to volunteer.  If any corporate or large groups  or service clubs would be interested in volunteering with us please contact Brian Banks at bbanks@nutritionforlearning.ca Applications are available now on our website www.nutritionforlearning.ca and our first virtual volunteer orientation sessions and information will be available beginning September 1st.

Summer Pop Up Snack Programs

Our Pop-Up Snack Program distributed approximately 500 bags day with a selection of food items that were normally available to students when Nutrition for learning programs were still in the schools such as yogurt, cheese, applesauce, healthy crackers, or cereal etc. A bag is offered to each student in a family in attendance at that location and consists of enough snacks for several days.

In addition to the snack bags and when available, we distributed some extra food items to families such as canned beans, loaf of bread, chicken noodle soup etc. These items are not offered all the time and are only meant to enhance the snack bags. If families needed more support due to food insecurity, they are directed to contact the Food Bank of Waterloo Region.Friday August 28th was our last day for summer pop ups and we gratefully received a multitude of thank you messages from the community.

“Thank you so much this summer. It was such a big help for the kids and what was going on. We are so thankful and grateful that there is a program such as this.”
“Thank you for continuing this program for so long! It was great!”
“Thank you for supporting so many families this summer!”
“It’s been fantastic! Thanks so much!”
